Assembly elections were held in 234 constituencies in a single phase yesterday. In Tamil Nadu, 71.79% votes were cast from 7 am to 7 pm. The highest turnout was 78 per cent in Kallakurichi district and 59.40 per cent in Chennai.
Coimbatore South BJP district chief Nandakumar lodged a complaint with the returning officer. Coimbatore South Assembly constituency candidate and People’s Justice Center chairman Kamal Haasan visited the polling booth. During the election, Kamal Haasan’s daughter Shruti Haasan broke into the polling booth.
The Code of Conduct for Elections states that no one other than the candidate or authorized party agents shall go to the polls. It is a crime for Shruti Hassan to go to the polls in defiance of this. He therefore complained that criminal action should be taken against Shrutihasan. It is hoped that the Election Commission will take appropriate action in this regard.
