New Delhi: The BJP has demanded that the Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi be renamed after Swami Vivekananda. Party National General Secretary C.T. Ravi asked for this. Later, several BJP leaders came forward with demands.
JNU, one of the leading universities in the country, is also a hotbed of agitation for the ruling BJP government. Founded in 1969, the university is named after India’s first Prime Minister. The BJP wants this to change.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a statue of Swami Vivekananda at the JNU campus a few days ago. This was followed by a demand for a name change.
The National General Secretary in charge of the States of Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Goa, C.T. Ravi made the request on Twitter. ‘Swami Vivekananda stood for the idea of India. His philosophy and values highlight the strength of India. This is enough to name Jawaharlal Nehru University after Swami Vivekananda. May the life of the patriotic monk of India inspire future generations’ -CT Ravi tweeted.
Later, BJP spokesperson Tajinder Bagga, national spokesperson Aparajitha Sarangi and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari took up the issue.
