Chennai: A policeman who got into a drunken brawl with a young woman waiting for a bus at a bus stop was rounded up by locals. Rajeev, head constable of Chennai KK Nagar police station, was assaulted. He was working at the MGR Nagar police station on a temporary basis.
The girl was picked up on her way home after duty at around 10 pm. The woman, an employee of a private hospital, was waiting for a bus near the Ambika Empire Hotel in Jawaharlal Nehru Salai. Rajeev, who was in a two-wheeler in uniform at the time, stopped the vehicle and asked her to come with him. When he refused, he was dragged away. As a result of the commotion, bystanders, locals and passers-by ran away and grabbed him and beat him. Some people had copied the footage of Rajeev being beaten up under the influence of alcohol on his mobile phone and posted it on social media.
Senior police officials told the media that the woman had received a complaint and the constable had been arrested. He was later released on bail due to injuries. Police said they will suspend him from service and take departmental action.
Last week, a constable in Tenkashi allegedly treated a young woman in a similar manner, which was widely reported on social media. The Madras High Court had intervened in the case and asked it to appoint a special team to probe such crimes. The court also directed that the case be registered on the basis of videos circulating on social media even though the victims have not lodged a complaint.
