Heavy rains in the Kumari region have caused flooding in residential areas. The Pechipparai Dam discharges 11,000 cubic feet of water per second.
Kanyakumari district has been receiving heavy rains for the last few days following Hurricane Yas which formed in the Bay of Bengal. In this condition, various parts of the district have been affected due to continuous rains since noon yesterday.
Heavy rainfall in residential areas and lowland arable lands, especially in urban areas like Nagercoil, Suchindram, Kulachal, Poothapandi, Chattaputhur, Marthandam, Thakkalai and Thirprappu districts. The public was distressed as household items were destroyed in the floods.
Hundreds of houses were damaged due to heavy rains and trees fell, causing power outages in various places. At the same time, due to heavy rains, 10 thousand cubic feet of water comes into the dam every second and 11 thousand 300 cubic feet of water is discharged from the dam due to safety reasons.
Thus floods occurred in various parts of the district. The Tirprappu Falls was also flooded. Similarly, the road leading to Veeramangalam was cut off due to violation of the lower Putheri Nedungulam. Authorities, led by Corporation Commissioner Asha Ajith, have been engaged in rescue and relief operations as the rains have receded.
