Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ruled that marriage between siblings is unethical and unacceptable. The court ruled that marriage between a man and a woman, even if they have reached the age of majority, is illegal.
The 21-year-old had filed an anticipatory bail application against the Punjab government. The young man and his 17-year-old niece were in love. The two lived together. The girl’s relatives lodged a complaint against him at the Ludhiana Khanna City Police Station on September 7. The youth had approached the high court after the police registered a case against him for abducting a minor girl.
Opposing the anticipatory bail application, the prosecution told the court that the girl was not of legal age and that they were both siblings. The prosecution also argued that Hindu marriage law prohibits marriages between directly related persons. Subsequently, the court ruled that marriage between close relatives was immoral and unacceptable to society.
