The Alipore Meteorological Department has said that Hurricane Yas, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, will make landfall between Sagarudwip in West Bengal and Paradwip in Orissa. As a result, heavy to very heavy rains are expected in the coastal districts from Tuesday. The Met Office said the storm was expected to intensify as Yas approaches Earth.
The Alipore Meteorological Department said in a bulletin at 2.30 pm on Wednesday that coastal districts, including Kolkata, would receive light rains on Monday. The coastal districts of the state, namely East Midnapore, West Midnapore, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Kolkata, Howrah and Hugli are likely to receive heavy rainfall from Tuesday. Alipore, meanwhile, said winds could reach 60 to 70 kmph.
The meteorological department said the storm’s speed would increase on Wednesday. Heavy rains are forecast for Hargarh, Kolkata, East and West Midnapore, North and South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hagli on Wednesday. Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia, Bardhaman and Nadia districts are likely to receive heavy rainfall. Heavy rainfall is also forecast in Murshidabad, Malda and South Dinajpur.
Alipore forecast speeds of 90 to 110 kmph on Wednesday afternoon. The hurricane is expected to reach speeds of 155 to 165 km / h (maximum 175 km / h), the Met Office said.
Alipore forecast heavy rains in Malda, Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Sikkim in North Bengal on Wednesday. Besides, Birbhum, Bankura, Purulia, Bardhaman and Murshidabad are also likely to receive heavy rainfall. However, after that, the amount of storm precipitation will gradually decrease. The hurricane will gradually weaken after losing strength.
